The Durham Miners Association (DMA) welcomes the announcement of an inquiry into the events at Orgreave on 18 June 1984.
The DMA thanks everyone at the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign and all those who have worked so hard for so many years to get us to this point. It is time for all of the facts about Orgreave to become known. It is time for truth and justice.
DMA Secretary Alan Mardghum said: “After many years of campaigning by the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign, we welcome the announcement from the Government that there is to be an inquiry into the events at Orgreave in June 1984.
“We hope that this inquiry will reveal the true extent of state violence against miners whose only crime was standing up and fighting for their jobs and communities. We need to know who gave the orders to use such excessive violence as was witnessed at Orgreave and most importantly there must be no cover up or whitewashing of the events. It is telling that Northumbria police have reportedly destroyed all files relating to the miners strike when it was apparent that an inquiry was imminent. We look forward to seeing the results of the inquiry.”
Please continue to give support to the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign. We endorse the campaign’s statement in response to this announcement and ask you to read it here.
