Ray Chadburn 1933-2025

The DMA will be represented at the funeral of Nottinghamshire miners leader Ray Chadburn. After working at Welbeck Colliery, Ray served as the President of the NUM Notts Area from 1977 until his retirement in 1989.

Together with Henry Richardson, who we lost in 2020, Ray ran the union through the most difficult of times, remaining loyal and working with tireless dedication to reform the NUM Area in Notts.

Our Secretary Alan Mardghum will represent the DMA at Ray’s funeral. Alan said: “Ray Chadburn stood loyal to his union throughout a very difficult period for the NUM.

“And history will record that in those most difficult of times, Ray Chadburn stood on the right side of history. Rest in eternal peace Ray. We send sincere Condolences from all at the Durham Miners Association to his family and friends.”

After the courts granted Notts NUM’s assets to the government-backed UDM, Ray was thrown out Berry Hill headquarters. Without any money or a base to operate from, Ray and Henry continued in their roles. They rebuilt the NUM in Nottinghamshire, which remains active in the communities of that coalfield to this day.

The funeral will take place at 11am on Friday 14 November at Sherwood Forest Crematorium (Ollerton), Newark-on-Trent, NG22 0DY.
